This isn’t the first pair of Retro 8’s Jordan brand has offered us this year. The iconic “Bugs” version of the shoe in White/Hyper Blue-True Red-Flint Grey dropped back on April. This pair, however is an all-new colorway, one we’ve never seen before. This Phoenix Suns-inspired flavor of the Retro 8 features a mostly black design close to what we’ve seen in both the “Playoff” and “Aqua” 8’s, but this time there’s a splash of gray about the distinguished ribbed design on the back of the Retro 8.

While many pitted this pair as a tribute to the Phoenix Suns and their legendary purple and orange color scheme, after seeing these in person there’s no way these were modeled after the team’s colors. Not only is the orange a lot closer to a neon variety of the color orange, yet the official colorway Nike gave this pair includes a “Deep Royal Blue” — not purple. While the pair isn’t spot on with the Knicks’ colors, in my opinion the nod should definitely go to New York on this one. Especially since we’ve already seen at least two other pairs of shoes release this year which were definitely inspired by the Suns (e.g.: Suns Foamposites & Barkley Posite Max).
This pair didn’t sellout as fast as day the Playoff edition of the Retro 8, yet it’s still a nice cop. This year is being dominated by the Retro 5, and once again this year’s bringing us a series of 4’s as well. This is the second of three confirmed Retro 8 releases on 2013. As of this writing, the Bugs, Suns and Playoff colorways have officially been released. The jury’s still out on whether or not a refresh of the “Aqua” colorway is in the pipeline for Jordan brand. Until then, these or the Playoff’s will have to do.
